Whether it’s dark rum, white rum or spiced rum, the important thing is that it is rum.
And it’s a perfect fit for Florida, where sugarcane is practically a deity. National Rum Day is Tuesday, Aug. 16, and there are plenty of South Florida restaurants, lounges and bars that will celebrate with special offers.
A few run all month long since August is Rum Month. How perfect is that? Now you don’t have to wait until later in the season for events such as the SoLa Rum, Food & Wine Festival on Oct. 15 in Lauderhill, where Musiq Soulchild will be the headliner. (Visit SoLaRumFoodWineFest.com.)
But let’s get back to National Rum Day… here are our five favorite specials, in no particular order.

Both Elizabeth’s and Louie Bossi’s are part of Big Time Restaurant Group’s portfolio. So it’s not surprising that the West Palm Beach-based food and beverage company prevailed upon their beverage director and sommelier, Ervin Machado, to create a cocktail for National Rum Day. What he came up with is a Cherry Mojito made with Miami’s Big Cypress Distillery rum, lemon-lime citrus juice, muddled black cherries, muddled basil, agave nectar and soda water for $13.50
221 SW First Ave., Fort Lauderdale; 954-686-8181; EatBigBuns.com/las-olas
This Las Olas/Riverfront restaurant is not only known for its burgers but also for over-the-top boozy milkshakes. For National Rum Day, Big Buns will launch a new Not Into Yoga Lada shake made as a piña colada with spiced rum for $9.99.
955 Alton Rd, Miami Beach; AirmailMiami.com
This box inside the Alton Food Hall is known for aviation-themed craft cocktails. For National Rum Day, it will offer the signature Airmail cocktail for $10 all day long (usually it’s $14). For the uninitiated, the Airmail cocktail’s lore has it that the drink was concocted in the 1930s by Bacardi, back when the company was in Cuba, as a sort of toast to the start of airmail service to Miami. To honor that origin, the Airmail lounge includes a postcard and a paper plane.
