5 things to know this weekend

Evacuation efforts go on at sprawling Ukrainian steel mill

Rescuers were seeking to evacuate more civilians from tunnels beneath a major steel plant in Mariupol as Ukrainian fighters make their last stand to prevent Moscow’s complete takeover of the important port city. Dozens were evacuated Friday from the Azovstal plant. The Russian military said the group of 50 included 11 children. Russian officials and Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said the evacuation efforts would continue into the weekend. The latest evacuations followed roughly 500 other civilians who got out of the plant and city in recent days. However, Ukrainian officials on Friday also warned about a potential offensive before Russia’s Victory Day Monday. The day marks the anniversary of the Soviet Union’s defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II, sparking worries the Russian military may increase attacks over the weekend. Also on Friday, President Joe Biden announced an additional $150 million in aidto include 25,000 155mm artillery rounds and additional military equipment.
